"well," he said, "i'm going to be all alone on thanksgiving..."
"you are; why???" i asked.
"they just told me i have to work. so, my parents will be going to memphis without me," he replied.
"you can come here," i invited. "katherine, oj, and i are going to watch CHristmas movies all day and get thanksgiving buffet to go."
"what about john???" he asked. (now, chico already knew the answer to this particular question because we'd just discussed it this past weekend.)
"john is going to his aunt opal's for thanksgiving," i said.
after a moment of silence...
chico asked, "is aunt opal fixing a real thanksgiving dinner???"
i laughed to myself and answered, "yes."
"well, i think i'd rather go with john," chico replied very seriously.
i thought i was going to crack up!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
here's the dilemma:
unfortunately, the thanksgiving holiday for us has always been more pain than pleasure. i hated even typing that, but it's true. i have never been able to go with john for thanksgiving lunch at his aunt opal's because i have had to stay home and cook for my mother's side family's thanksgiving supper. not only that, but i have never been able to go to my dad's side family's thanksgiving, either, for the same reason.
so, last year i surrendered!!!
john went to his aunt's, my parents couldn't make it into town, my aunt and uncle had dinner at their house, katherine and i watched Christmas movies while eating take out thanksgiving buffet, there were no hurt feelings, and everyone seemed to be happy (with the exception of my brother, who was supposed to join katherine and me but had the flu).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
so, should i send chico with john, or should i fix a bird and the works (even though john is going to come home full, katherine doesn't like the traditional thanksgiving dinner, and i am on weight watchers)???
what would you do???
love and blessings,
dani xx

because of hurt feelings amongst my family members!!!

Oh that's tough--I hate when the holidays cause issues :( I am glad you found a good solution.
As far as Chico--it sounds like he craving the traditional Thanksgiving, esp. since he will be without his parents. I'd send him with John.
That's a tough one. Let us know what you decide.
I think that all things considered, I would probably let chico go with John ~ that saves you having to make the full works ~ for just one person really!!
Situations like this have arisen in my family in the past and I have given up trying to please everyone now ~ as I was failing at that anyway ha ha !!
Hope that whatever you decide, you have a wonderful Thansgiving!!
Love and big hugs to you XXXX
Decisions, decisions, ... sorry I'm probably not the best person to ask what to do, but watching Christmas movies all day seems like fun to me!

Ya know Dani, I think it all comes down to one thing. Are John and Chico comfortable enough with each other to go to Aunt Opal's and not have it feel weird? If so then I would send them on their way, and then you do your thing with Katherine. It could even become a new tradition.
Watching Christmas movies sounds good to me, especially if it ends up just the two of you ~ it would be a nice girly night.
I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving whatever you all decide to do.
love,

Dani, seems like I'm going to be the odd one out, but it might be fun for you all to cook the dinner together. I bet Chico would help out. I'm going back to WW tomorrow. If you want a buddy let me know!
Let him go with John & have some Man time together.. There is no reason at all you should cook all that for just him when he can go with John or do what you guys have planned....
I think it is time for chico and john to have a little bonding time!
Go buffet, definitely. Especially if Katherine isn't into traditional dinners. Chico needs to know what he's getting into! And let him make his own choice...
Send him away.
:)

Send the boy with the boy and have them bring home dessert. After traveling for the last 18 or so Thanksgivings (that's just since Troy & I've been together), we're staying home and my parents are coming to me! Gobble, Gin
P.S. Look for the band from Bowie High School in Austin Tx in the Macy's parade. My nephew Kyle is marching. He plays saxophone and looks like a Brockman!
I'm with the rest of the group...send Chico and John to Aunt Opal's and you and K can have a stress free day, then hit the stores on Friday!
There's nothing wrong with a Thanksgiving buffet!
Hi Dani
Mmm, it's always such a shame when "family politics" dictate special and festive days.
Sticking to your original plan sounds like the way to go (movies and buffet)and Chico then gets to choose. He is lucky in that his options are the best of both worlds - either a traditional sort of thing at Aunt Opal's, or a fun, relaxed time with you girls. What does Katherine prefer?
Dani, I hope that this year, Thanksgiving can bring you more pleasure than pain.
Please let us know what the outcome is.
Lots of love and hugs
Elise
You are going to make me cry again with that take out buffet in the styrofoam container. Cook a turkey breast and small servings for Chico--God love him.
