come on eileen...

this one hit wonder is considered to be one of the very best of all time...

however, there's been a lot of discussion over the years about the meaning of the song. i know what i think it means, but i'd love to hear your take:)

here are the lyrics to dexys midnight runners - come on eileen...

Poor old Johnny Ray sounded sad upon the radio
He moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried,
And sang along who'd blame them?
You've grown, so grown
Now I must say more than ever
(Come on Eileen) Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye Aye
And we can sing just like our fathers
Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen
These people round here, wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces, so resigned to what their fate is
But not us, no not us, we are far too young and clever
(Remember) Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye
Eileen I'll hum this tune forever
Come on Eileen, I swear, well he means
Ah come on let's, take off everything
Pretty red dress Eileen (Tell him yes)
Ah come on let's, ah come on Eileen
Pretty red dress Eileen (Tell him yes)
Ah come on let's, ah come on Eileen, please
Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye
Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye
(Now you have grown, now you have shown, oh, Eileen)
Said Come on, Eileen taloo-rye-aye (repeat in background)
You've grown...
So grown (Show, how you feel)
Now I must say more than ever
Things 'round here have changed
I said too-ra-loo-ra-too-ra-loo-rye-aye
Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen
Come on Eileen, I swear (well he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Well, they're dirty
Come on Eileen

this is just a fun post...
so, don't read anyone else's thoughts, please:)
i want your original thoughts!!!

have fun...

love and blessings,
dani xx

I've not heard that song for years and i was tapping my feet!
I thought it was just a fun song, but when i read the lyrics, could it be about lust?? Is it ok to write that??!
Anyways, it's a great song and i like it. I will be humming that all day now!

I'm not sure... maybe it's about the guy wanting to have his way with Eileen??? it's a great song though! Thanks for the trip down memory lane... have done that quite a bit today!!

I need at least a year to think about this one.

I just always blame drugs. So the lyrics depends alot on the drug that was being used at the time. Eileen could be acid or something. I am messing around because I have no ideas for you Dani.

First of all, this is one of my all time favorite songs. Thank you so much for the lyrics though. I can't believe how many I didn't know. Funny how some songs I listen to and never can catch what they are saying. I have always figured it was about some horny guy trying to get sweet innocent little Eileen to go to bed with him. After reading the lyrics I feel that is mostly what is about, but there also seems to be another underlying theme. I'm not sure why but it brought to my mind "The Great Deppresion of the 30's"

I think it means that he doesn't want to be stuck in a rut like all the other people where they live, he wants eileen to go with him and
have some fun (tee hee!!!!!!)
I loved that song and remember dancing to it ha ha !!!!!!
What a fun post ~ can't wait to hear your take!!!!

hey, amanda:) it's definitely ok to call it "lust"; it is what it is!!!
hi, tanya:) yep, he's definitely tryin to woo eileen!!! are you going through your yesterday stuff, too???
omgoodness, jan, you crack me up:)
you know, it probably is about drugs... i didn't even think about that???
of course i thought sammy davis jr was singing about a willie wonka sort in "the candy man"... only to find out that the candy man was a drug dealer:(
ha!!! suz, i say there is NO way to understand any of this song without the lyrics for reference. i loved the song in the day, too, and was happy to happen back on to it!!!
i'm glad you found this post fun, tabitha:) this was back in the glory days of mtv!!! did you have mtv in the uk???

Hi Dani

That's one of the songs I used to dance to all of the time when I used to go out clubbing. I never really thought much about the lyrics, but now that I've read them I find it hard to decipher what this song is about. On the surface I would say it is about a man falling for Eileen. But, I'm sure ther's more to it than that. I can't get my post baby brain around it at the moment!!

How did you go with your de-clutter days. I am the same when it comes to anything sentimental. Just this morning, I asked Troy where Blake's name tag was that I had written out for him at Gymboree today. Troy casually said that he threw it out. I was horrified, it was his very first name tag and I wanted to keep it. Troy had thrown it in with Sav's nappy when he changed her. After a few deep breaths (on my part), some rational, quick thinking talk from Troy I was at peace with my loss!!!

Lots of love and hugs
