remembrance...

(memorial day in our town)

crosses are set up each year in our central park in memory of all those hendersonians who served in the armed forces and have since died. our local american legion has always been in charge of this great undertaking. they have seen to it that all the crosses have been erected and that new names have been added to the crosses each year.

it has always been up to friends and family members to decorate (place flowers, flags, pictures, etc.) at each of the crosses. up until the last few years an elderly couple, herb and jane hoffman, in our community have gone to the park with artificial flowers in tow and have decorated each empty cross so that no veteran's cross would go undecorated... unnoticed.

given that mrs. hoffman died recently, and mr. hoffman is no longer physically able, the legion now sees to it that every cross has at least a small american flag attached.

it is a really quite beautiful, serene sight to behold...

love and God's blessings,
dani xx

Such a waste of a young life. It breaks my heart when i hear daily that another soldier has been killed. May all the brave soldiers that have died in conflict be at peace resting with God.
Hope you had a lovely Memorial Day.

We have our rememberance day here in November. I agree with Amanda, all that loss of life is sad. My Father was in the army and a boyfriend of mine was killed in Northern Ireland during the troubles (I was only 17 he was 19).
Prayers to all those families who have lost a loved one.

Hi Dani,
Thanks for that. It is a long time ago now, over 20 years (goodness I feel old!!), but you don't ever forget. I still keep in touch with his sister, we were at school together and have kept in touch all these years.

Hi there Dani

What a sight this must be. Every cross having some sort of tribute on it to show that people do remember and acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice of these men and women.

Dani, thank you so much for your thoughts and comments on my blog. It's always such a nice feeling to know that friends are thinking of you. Can you believe that I am still pretty darn uncomfortable. The doctor said that because I am pregnat there isn't too much I can do except rest. I am resting, but getting a little impatient at how long this is taking to get better. Now I can't wait until the night I can finally go to sleep lying down, hopefully it's not too far off now. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and well wishes. They make my day.

Love and hugs
Elise.

elise,
i cannot wait for the night that you can get some rest, too. i hate that you have a "catch 22" in the pain department!!! does tylenol help at all (i know it doesn't have any anti-inflammatory), but does it help at all with your pain???
i will continue to pray that you will get relief... bless your sweet heart.
love,
dani

What a sweet post, Dani. A really great reminder of what Memorial Day is really about. Makes me feel kinda bad that I didn't do more for it - especially since Perry served for 5 years in the USMC...

dani said...

i didn't realize perry was in the marines... my brother in law served in the marines during vietnam. he never said much about it until right before he died of cancer several years ago...
